Do you need an alcohol licence?

If you want to sell alcohol to your customers, then you need an alcohol licence. An alcohol licence in the UK is called a Premises Licence. Thousands of different venues across the UK sell alcohol to their customers using the permission given by a premises licence. If you have a venue, a restaurant for example, selling alcohol to your customers can add valuable profits to your business. A Premises Licence may also cover permission to sell hot food after 11pm, have live and recorded music at your venue or even let you host film screenings and plays amongst other things. Long story short, if don’t have a Premises Licence you could be missing out on valuable profits for your business.
What is a Premises Licence?

What is an alcohol licence or a premises licence to be exact? Simply, the licence lets you and your staff sell alcohol to members of the public. Whether you already have a business up and running, you dream about offering the most spectacular cocktails around or selling your favourite craft beers online, you’ll need a premises licence to have the correct permission to make alcohol sales. A Premises Licence will grant you this permission in England and Wales under the Licensing Act 2003. Selling alcohol or carrying out any licensable activity without a licence could land you with a criminal record, up to six months in prison and an unlimited fine from the courts. It’s something you’ll definitely need to avoid the long arm of the law.
So, what do you need?

To sell alcohol, you’ll need a Premises Licence and a Personal Licence. The Premises Licence outlines what permission that the venue has, for example the times the premises is allowed to sell alcohol, it will also include a set of conditions that will have been approved by the authorities, we’ll get into that a bit further on.
Every Premises Licence has what’s called a Designated Premises Supervisor named on the licence, the Designated Premises Supervisor, is the person that’s responsible for overseeing the alcohol sales at the venue, they’re the person that will typically be the first point of contact for the authorities if they have any questions or if anything goes wrong. Crucially, only people that hold a Personal Licence can be named as a Designated Premises Supervisor, the Designated Premises Supervisor could be you or one of your employees.
